In 2012, Mehdi Amili migrated from Morocco to Bondi Beach. He always had a love for food, due to his father owning a Moroccan restaurant for 52 years. Mehdi worked for many steak houses in Bondi; Meat Wine & Co., Hurricane Grill and Kelly’s Grill Bar. In 2014, he began his Macelleria journey working as a part time chef. Soon after, Mehdi realised his appreciation and love for the Macelleria food was a lot more than a casual job and decided to open his own store, beginning with Richmond in February 2018, and later Moonee Ponds.
At Macelleria, our customers know to expect high quality, Australian produced meats. The meat sourced by Macelleria has a dry age of 6-8 weeks (minimum of 4 weeks). The taste of the meat is always consistent, with high bursts of flavour and a soft succulent texture. Customers always walk out of Macelleria with a big smile and a full belly!
Where Macelleria is unique comes down to how we stimulate all 5 basic human senses:
Touch: The rustic feel of the tables complemented by the smooth tiles allows for a formal yet welcoming set up
Sight: The display of meat allows for customers to select their cut of steak, sausages, skewers and chicken
Sound: The sounds of the hustle and bustle on the street outside combined with the chatter of the other diners create a communal atmosphere
Smell: The richness of steaks coming out of the kitchen creates a strong and salivating aroma for the restaurant
Taste: The end result, eating the juicy and delicious food
Since it opened, Macelleria Richmond had 6 customers who would travel from Essendon to eat most weeks. After forming a relationship with Mehdi, he saw an opportunity to expand the Macelleria business and decided to open another restaurant in Moonee Ponds.
Macelleria Moonee Ponds has 140 seats, including outdoor seating, and seats surrounding the bar and open kitchen, creating a unique and inclusive dining experience. The meat display has steaks, chicken, skewers and sausages, with an additional selection of cured meats.
Macelleria is known for our delicious steaks and has recently been voted the 4th best steak restaurant in the world by Big 7 Travels. Big 7 Travels are food experts who have strict criteria that determines the top 50 restaurants in the world.
Mehdi Amili recommends the Scotch Fillet as the best cut of meat. Best cooked medium rare, the Scotch Fillet is one of the most tender and tastiest steaks. The Scotch Fillet has a burst of flavour, which is complemented by any of the 3 available sauces; Pepper, Mushroom or Red Wine Jus.
Macelleria Moonee Ponds is located on Hall Street, within Moonee Ponds Central, and is set to open in December 2019.
